It’s a day to remember. It’s the day when a man and a woman stand before the congregation of their friends and family to exchange vows and declare their eternal love. The rings that are exchanged in anticipation of that day, or on the day itself, are permanent expressions of that commitment.
There can be many steps forms of endearment given between the first breath of love to the wedding day. Promise rings have become popular among young couples who are not yet ready to take on the responsibility of a marriage. These are rings that sit between the “going steady, wearing his school ring” stage, and the engagement. If the ring contains a diamond, it is usually smaller than a traditional engagement ring. But the ring can have any kind of stone, and be any style. The important element is the sentiment and the promise made for which the ring is symbolic.
While the promise ring signifies the pledge between a man and a woman to maintain the integrity of the relationship, the engagement ring turns the promise into the serious commitment to legalize the union.
Choosing the ring together has become more popular than the “Surprise! Will you marry me and accept this engagement ring that you are going to hate but have to wear for the rest of your life” scenario. In North America it is general practice for the woman to wear an engagement ring, but not the man. There is a movement toward male engagement rings, but it is still not significant. The male engagement ring is usually a band with a single diamond, or a small cluster, set fairly level with the band. This ring can be used as a wedding ring after the ceremony, or moved to the other hand. Since men’s wedding bands are usually wider and heavier than a woman’s, wearing both rings on one finger may be too bulky.
Wedding rings can be bought separately or as part of a set. Some people have the woman’s engagement and wedding rings welded together, forever joining the pledge and the fulfillment of the couple’s love. Most wear the rings together, but as separate pieces.
There is no set rule as to when it is appropriate to gift your bride with an anniversary or eternity ring. She may be already wearing one, as many women now choose the solid or half circle of diamonds as their wedding ring. Diamonds are associated with the 60th anniversary, but the rings are often given on important occasions such as the birth of a child. The fifth or tenth anniversaries are popular for giving an anniversary or eternity band.
The unbroken circle that is the band of a ring is the symbol of eternal love. Gifting and wearing some form of ring signifies the specialness of the relationship, whether it is the innocence of new love or the binding of a couple in marriage. Long after the wedding pictures have yellowed and the fragile preserved bouquet turns to dust, the ring on your finger will still be there to remind you of the commitment you made to each other.
