That Old Song   by Teresa R. Jones

That Old Song

I arise in the morning and thank God that all is well.
After taking time for mediation and prayer that old song begins to play.
The reason I know it is old because the same song has been playing for almost two decades.

By the way the name of that old song is “A Good Government Job”
I started out as a contractor and partook of the benefits of a government employee; therefore, that old song was a sweet melody in my ear.
Seven years after my contractor tenure, I was offered a position as an official government employee, that old song hit # 1 on the charts.

Since I have been playing that old song, it has played in harmony with my world. I’ve gotten a couple of promotions, won a few accolades and I get a day off every other week, but as I sit in my 7X8 square foot cubicle day after day, it dawns on me that this old song has been playing for quite some time.

Over the past few years that old song has been remixed and the tempo has changed. “A Good Government Job” =received new perks such as transit checks, flexi-place schedules and union representation. However, by the time 5:00 pm appears on the computer screen at the end of the workday, it sets in that it is still “that same old song.”

Yes, many years have passed, and that old song has continued to play during downsizing, recession and outsourcing. It’s music made a smooth transition from 45, to cassette, to CD, all without skipping a beat. Yet that familiar tune reminds me that it is just that same old song.

As I look over my life, especially the past twenty years, my life has changed drastically. And for the most part it has been for my good. But as I look to the future, whether it’s the next year, the next month, the next week or even the next day. One thing is crystal clear… I need A New Song.
